Inflation wants to take away your craving for tacos al pastor

In addition to turkey, pozole and cod, consumers will face problems indulging in other cravings such as tacos al pastor.

According to a study by the consultant Kantar Latin America, tacos al pastor are the craving that Mexicans order the most at home on these December dates, followed by hamburgers, three-cheese pizza and basket tacos.

The firm details in a report that home orders for these products increase at the end of the year because consumers avoid leaving home and save time: “9.5% of individuals who order food at home consume tacos al pastor, they contribute 1.9% to the growth of occasions that food is ordered at home”, says Kantar, whose survey included interviews in the Valley of Mexico, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Chiapas, Campeche, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Yucatán.

Manuel Ruvalcaba, who has a taco al pastor business in the Álvaro Obregón Mayor’s Office, tells Expansión that only meat registers an increase of up to 60%, in addition to tortillas and the marinade used to make the product.

“A kilo for al pastor meat is between 120 and 140 pesos per kilo, depending on the quality (…) “This year we increased 5 pesos per taco. Right now we stay like this, with a price of 25 pesos each, ”he commented.

Data from the Inegi indicate that at the end of November, the price of the tortilla has increased 16.21%, while the kilo of pork loin became more expensive 10.4%. The pineapple has an increase of 23.2%. These increases exceed inflation of 7.41% in the reference period.

So if you want to pamper your palate with some tacos al pastor in these December holidays, it is very likely that you will have to think twice.
