The Foreign Minister of Panama, Jananina Tewaney, exposed this Wednesday in Washington the “challenges” that her country faces regarding migration at its borders, during a meeting held with the Secretary of State of the United States, Anthony Blinken.
“We understand the immigration challenges facing the US, but we face them too. And we are here again to help each other,” Tewaney said.
The Panamanian Foreign Minister added that there are many actions that could be taken with the migration problem and also referred to the dangerous Darien Junglewhich, he said, “is not a safe place and should never be used as a route.”
Secretary Blinken indicated for his part that the discussion with the Panamanian foreign minister was “productive” and that he wants to work together “to guarantee safe, humane and orderly migration”, in addition to strengthening economies and supply chains and increasing regional security. .
He also stressed that Panama is a fundamental partner for Washington and many other countries in the region, when it comes to addressing the challenges of irregular migration.
“We are facing together what is truly a historic challenge,” said the head of US diplomacy and assured that there are more than 100 million people on the move today in the world, “more than at any other time in recorded history.” .
“People are on the move and there is an increasing shared sense of responsibility that we all have to manage migration in our hemisphere in a humane and orderly manner,” said Blinken.
