Square Enix launched in 1999 Chocobo Racingan interesting proposal with which he brought characters from final fantasy to the race tracks. After 20 years, the Japanese company brought it back, but in such a loose and incorrect way that it has just announced that it will stop receiving new content, leaving fans dismayed.
Chocobo GP debuted on January 12 of this year, but today, a few days after its first anniversary, Square Enix announced that it will stop supporting it and that includes the cancellation of new characters and tracks.
According to the official statement, Season 5, which has just begun, will mark the end of “large-scale updates”, that is, those that include new characters or maps.

Will it be possible to continue playing Chocobo GP?
This game ran on an as-a-service model that allowed players to progress each season to try and earn new characters and Mythril, the game’s premium currency, among other rewards.
However, after Season 5, the title will practically no longer receive new content. Of course, it will be possible to continue playing the mode Chocobo GP. Likewise, the leaderboard will continue, but without the use of Prize Pass levels.
To this end of support, Square Enix has removed microtransactions, as it is no longer possible to purchase Mythril with real money. Players who still have this currency will be able to use it during Season 5 or after, but will not be able to earn more. However, purchases will be fully enabled as of May 31, 2023.
“Since it is not possible to receive a refund on purchased Mythril, please make sure to spend it before it expires,” Square Enix told fans.
In case you missed it: fans criticized Square Enix for being greedy with Chocobo GP.

Fans regret that Square Enix has ruined the racing game of final fantasy
Taking into account that Chocobo GP Just approaching its first year on the market, we doubt Square Enix plans to only support it for 1 year, especially after striving to bring back a franchise that had been forgotten for decades.
“Please stop pushing games as a service. They’re boring, your players won’t buy jackpots. Focus on making good single player games, that’s what you’re good at”, commented a user, alluding to Chocobo GP, FFVII The First Soldier Y BABYLLON’S FALLall of them games as a service that failed and whose end of support has already been announced.
Please stop trying to push live service games (this game, FFVII 1st, babylon’s fall…) they are boring, your players won’t buy bad cashgrabs. Focus on making good single player games, that’s what you are good at ?

It’s a shame that after more than 20 years, the racing franchise of final fantasy return only to have Square Enix turn their back on it in less than 1 year. However, it was not something sudden, but rather the company saw indicators that something was wrong, precisely when fans expressed their dissatisfaction with microtransactions, progression and more aspects of the service model of Chocobo GP at its premiere, something that could have scared away many interested parties. Attempts were made to correct these problems, but apparently they were not enough.
After seeing several title failures that curiously share the game-as-a-service model, Square Enix should be smart enough to identify that there is a problem with the vision it has of these games or perhaps the approach it takes is not ideal and the best it would be to change it or, as the fans say, throw away this model and “scavenger games” to better focus on single player games.
