Two representatives of a Russian energy company arrived in Sri Lanka on Thursday to meet with the government and discuss the possibility of supplying oil to the island after the authorities asked Russian President Vladimir Putin for help in the midst of an economic crisis.
The leader of the National Freedom Front, Wimal Weerawansa, and several members of the formation have received the Russian delegation at the airport, according to information from the ‘Daily Mirror’ newspaper.
Also, the Sri Lankan authorities have reported that next week they will send a delegation to Russia to address the issue in what will be the second visit in a single month by ministerial representatives from Sri Lanka.
On Wednesday, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa asked Russian President Vladimir Putin for help to acquire loans and be able to buy oil in the face of the serious economic crisis in the country.
“I have had very productive talks with President Putin. I have thanked him for all the support received to overcome the challenges and have asked for help in overcoming the current economic problems,” Rajapaksa said in a message on his Twitter account.
His words come after the country’s prime minister, Ranil Wickramasinghe, warned that the Sri Lankan economy “has completely collapsed”, so the country cannot afford to import oil.
