Putin wants to "strengthen" the relationship between Russia and Brazil, says Lula

First modification:

After a phone call with Vladimir Putin, Brazil’s president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that Russia wants to strengthen the relationship between the two countries. Lula was already Putin’s counterpart during his first two terms, between 2003 and 2010.

“I spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who congratulated me on the electoral victory [de octubre]. He wished us a good government and the strengthening of the relationship between our countries,” Lula published on her social media.

Brazil “returned, seeking dialogue with everyone and striving to seek a world without hunger and with peace,” added Lula, who takes office on January 1.

Lula was already Putin’s counterpart during his first two terms in Brasilia, between 2003 and 2010. Russia and Brazil are important partners in the Brics bloc of emerging economies, also made up of China and South Africa.

In April, the icon of the Latin American left sparked controversy when he claimed in an interview with Time magazine that Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky was “as responsible as Putin” for the war.

“I see the president of Ukraine on television as if he were celebrating, being applauded on his feet by all the parliaments (in the world). That guy is as responsible as Putin. Because in a war there is not only one guilty party,” Lula told the american magazine.

The far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, defeated by Lula in a runoff vote on October 30, defended Brazil’s “neutrality” in the face of the conflict.

On February 15, just days before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Bolsonaro met Putin in Moscow to ensure continued supplies of Russian fertilizer to Brazil, a major agricultural power.
