Canada charges one of its citizens with plotting coup in Haiti

A Canadian man has been charged with planning a terrorist act to overthrow the Haitian government of the late Jovenel Moïse, authorities said Thursday.

Gérald Nicolas, 51, will appear in Quebec City court on December 1 to face three counts of terrorism, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a press release.

Nicolas is charged with leaving Canada to facilitate terrorist activity and provide assets for terrorist purposes.

Police said their investigation is unrelated to the July 2021 murder of Moïse. Nicolas, a resident of Lévis, Quebec, planned to launch an armed uprising in Haiti and seize power, the agency added.

Nicolas traveled to Haiti to coordinate with a group of individuals planning to take part in the coup, police say.
