Mexico and Turkey announce the resumption of a free trade agreement

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the resumption of bilateral relations with Turkey through the negotiations of a free trade agreement between the two countries.

The Mexican portfolio minister, Marcelo Ebrard, who is visiting Ankara, has discussed with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavasoglu, the situation of their bilateral relations, as well as international affairs.

Both have reiterated their commitment to deepen their strategic partnership. “It is about a constructive policy, investment, development and technology, innovation. That is what the relationship between Turkey and Mexico is about,” explained Ebrard.

“There are many fields of common work: migration, culture, investment, joint work for development initiatives (…). Mexico sees all of this very favorably, including the Free Trade Agreement or Agreement that we can have between the two economies, it is convenient for both countries”, declared the Mexican minister, according to a statement from the Ministry.

For his part, Cavusoglu has indicated that the adoption of a joint declaration “will further improve” relations between the two countries “in all areas.” “Our goal is to reach a commercial volume of 5 billion dollars,” he has assured her in a message on her profile on the social network Twitter.

With this objective, the ministers have agreed to organize a second meeting “as soon as possible” to carry out a “comprehensive review of the economic relationship and identify the steps to follow to further increase trade and investment”, ensuring that the deadline for the meeting would be 2024.
