Brexit support hits all-time lows, poll says

November 17 () –

Public support for Brexit is at its lowest point, according to a survey published this Thursday by the YouGov company, which shows that only 32 percent of Britons support the United Kingdom leaving the European Union, while 56 percent believe it was a wrong decision.

The poll would mark a major change in opinion since June 2021, with one in five people regretting Britain’s formal departure from the EU. And it is that in the last 18 months, supporters of Brexit have been reduced from 88 to 70 percent, a percentage that marks historical lows.

For their part, the number of people who at the time voted to leave the EU and who now think it was not the best decision has shot up from 4 to 19 percent, according to the British channel Sky News.

These data are known after the Finance Minister of the United Kingdom, Jeremy Hunt, has confirmed that the country contemplates a 1.4 percent recession in 2023, therefore, to tackle the economic crisis, the Government has announced increases of taxes.

A former interest rate setter at the Bank of England said this week that Brexit is the main reason the UK is now facing a new round of austerity, as it reduced “significantly the potential output of the economy” and ” eroded business investment.

“The UK economy as a whole has been permanently damaged by Brexit,” explained Michael Saunders, who is also an external member of the central bank’s monetary policy committee, in an interview with Bloomberg collected by the newspaper ‘The Guardian’ .
