The Republican Party finally won the 218 votes needed to lead the House of Representatives on Wednesday, a week and a day after the midterm elections in United States.
“Republicans have officially flipped the House of the People! Americans are ready for a new direction and House Republicans are ready to deliver,” announced House Republican Leader Kevin McKarthy.
The result has been reported both by the press agencies PA Y Reuters, as by the projection of Edison Researchafter the Republican victory in the 27th district of California.
Shortly thereafter, President Joe Biden congratulated McCarthy, saying he was “ready to work with House Republicans to achieve results for working families,” according to a statement released by the White House.
“Last week’s election demonstrated the strength and resilience of American democracy,” Biden said. “There was a strong pushback against election deniers, political violence and intimidation.”
“There was an emphatic statement that, in the United States, the will of the people prevails,” insisted the president. “The future is too bright to get caught up in a political war.”
Despite having secured dominance in the House, the Republicans will likely have the closest majority so far in the 21st century. Such an outcome is a far cry from the landslide victory Republicans predicted ahead of this year’s midterm elections, when the party hoped to reset its agenda by capitalizing on economic challenges and Biden’s lagging popularity.
President Joe Biden will now have to deal with the political scenario of two years of divided government, counting on the victory of the Democratic Party in the race for the Senate.
