Recoleta: Sergio Lavandero, National Science Award 2022 will inaugurate the Open Science talks in the neighborhood

This Friday, November 18, starting at 10 in the morning at the Recoleta Municipality square, the first talk of the Open Science initiative in the neighborhood will be held, organized by the Explora Project of the Northern Metropolitan Region of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation

Open Science in the neighborhoodis an activity organized by Explora RM Norte, which seeks to strengthen the link between researchers, disseminators and society, through participatory meetings that promote the socialization and appropriation of knowledge in the community.

In its first version, this year three activities will be carried out in the community, starting with a talk by Dr. Sergio Lavandero, 2022 National Prize for Natural Sciences, academic at the University of Chile and director of the ACCDiS Advanced Center for Chronic Diseases, who will offer a free talk called “Don’t let your heart break” where he will address one of the deadliest diseases in Chile and the world, it is arterial hypertension and how it directly influences the functioning of the heart.

“Arterial hypertension, obesity, diabetes, myocardial infarction, cancer, heart failure are some examples of the so-called chronic non-communicable diseases and that together explain between 70-80% of mortality in almost all countries of the world. They are characterized by developing very slowly over decades as a result of a combination of modifiable (tobacco consumption, salt, amount and type of diet, sedentary lifestyle, etc.) and non-modifiable (also known as genetic) factors; I will be talking about this topic with the Recoleta community this Friday morning. I’ll wait for you!” commented Dr. Sergio Lavandero.

The activity is completely free and all residents of the place and its surroundings can participate.

In addition, Medina emphasized that “this policy of opening these meeting spaces responds to the line of work promoted by the administration headed by our mayor Daniel Jadue in order to bring scientific knowledge closer to our students and neighbors regarding the impact they achieve in people. In fact, in ourselves, that we work in the field of education is an unquestionable benefit and that from the pedagogical point of view it is of enormous relevance”.
