IBM presents Osprey, its quantum processor with more than 400 qubits

IBM has submitted his osprey quantum processor of more than 400 quantum bits or qubits, as well as new solutions to facilitate the adoption of quantum computing for companies, and has offered an update on IBM Quantum System Two.

The technology company offers IBM Quantum Summit 2022 its “quantum roadmap”, the latest advances that will define the next stage of quantum computing or supercomputing, as stated by IBM Fellow and VP of IBM Quantum, Jay Gambetta.

In the new edition of this annual summit, IBM has presented Osprey, its new processor 433 bit quantumwhich triples the 127 qubits of the predecessor system, IBM Eagle, which was introduced in 2021.

Osprey “brings us a little closer to the point where quantum computers will be used to tackle previously unsolvable problems“, said Dr. Darío Gil, IBM Senior Vice President and Research Director.

The company has defended that Osprey can execute complex quantum calculations “beyond what any classical computer would be capable of doing”, and for reference, has indicated that “the number of classical bits that would be needed to represent a state in the IBM processor Osprey exceeds the total number of atoms in the universe that we know of.”

In addition, IBM has launched a Qiskit Runtime beta update, a quantum software with which it seeks to simplify the adoption of this technology, addressing the correction and solution of errors. To do this, it now allows the user to trade speed for quality with a simple option in the API.

It has also announced a collaboration with Vodafone to explore how to apply the IBM quantum security cryptography in the technological infrastructure of the telecommunications company. And it has shared in the expansion of its quantum network customer ecosystem, which is growing with Bosch, the French bank Crédit Mutuel Alliance Fédérate and the Swiss innovation campus uptownBasel.

UPGRADE FROM IBM QUANTUM SYSTEM TWO

IBM has also used the annual event to update the details of the new IBM Quantum System Two, a system designed to be modular and flexible, combining multiple interconnected processors into a single system.

This system will be available end of 2023 and will be the basis of quantum-centric supercomputing, the next step in quantum computing that employs a modular architecture, uses quantum communication to increase its computing power, and hybrid cloud middleware to seamlessly integrate quantum and classical workflows.
