Colombian President Gustavo Petro calls the climate change conferences held so far a “failure” during his speech at Cop27 in Egypt. It is only public and global multilateral planning that allows us to move to a decarbonized world economy. The UN should be the stage for such planning,” he explained.
“The International Monetary Fund must initiate the program of exchanging debt for investment in the adaptation and mitigation of climate change in all the developing countries of the world,” said Petro, naming the ten points of the decalogue.
The climatic combat passes through the Amazon jungle. According to the UN, Colombia lost between 2018 and 2021 an area of 7,108 km2. Petro, thus distancing himself from his predecessors, announced a plan to preserve it. “Colombia will grant 200 million dollars annually for 20 years to save the Amazon jungle in its territory. We expect the world’s contribution,” explained the president.
Petro hopes to ally with Venezuela and Brazil to save the Amazon. Norway and Germany supported the initiative and announced from Sharm el Sheikh an aid of 25 million dollars for the Colombian Amazon.
“We are very happy with the political direction of this government. Colombia is a key country for the protection of the Amazon rainforest,” Norwegian Environment Minister Espen Barth Eide declared in Spanish at an event with his Colombian counterpart Susana Muhamad.
The current collaboration with Norway, Germany and the United Kingdom could be extended soon, if an initiative proposed this Monday by the French president, Emmanuel Macron, and for which Colombia showed interest, materializes in 2023.
As Macron explained, it would be a “positive preservation” program, which seeks to close “political and financial” agreements country by country to protect “critical ecosystems” that are large carbon sinks, as is the case of the jungle Colombian, he clarified.
