Nov. 7 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Algerian authorities have presented this Monday a formal request to join the BRICS, an economic-commercial organization made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
This has been confirmed to the media by the representative of the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in charge of international associations, Leila Zarrougi, according to the Al Shorouk news portal.
Algeria, which has participated as a guest country in the last BRICS summit in China, has argued its request in view of the need to open up trade with other states.
From Algiers they have remarked that their request for membership has been well received by Moscow and Beijing, two of the most prominent governments of the bloc, although joining the group must still be studied by the rest of the members.
Already in August, the Algerian president, Abdelmayid Tebune, affirmed that the country complied “to a large extent” with the conditions to join the organization and recognized Algiers’ interest in the group’s economic and political influence.
Already then, Tebune acknowledged that joining the BRICS was “possible” and predicted “good news” in the future. “Joining this group would make Algeria, a pioneer country of non-alignment, safe from the friction between the two poles,” he remarked.
