INTRODUCTION
There is a growing demand at the local, national and international levels for quality and integrated statistics that allow better information on the disaster risk management cycle. In response, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) developed the “Disaster-Related Statistics Framework” e-learning course. DRSF), in collaboration with the Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP), and is available in English, Spanish and French.
Thanks to the close communication between the regional commissions, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) call for the presentation of this e-learning course. As part of this launch event, an overview of global and regional disaster-related statistics will be provided. In addition, the participants will have a general knowledge of the contents of the e-learning course on the framework of statistics related to disasters.
The main objectives of the course are to develop national capacities in the compilation of statistics related to disasters in order to improve disaster management and promote risk-informed sustainable development in the countries. It also seeks to facilitate national monitoring and reporting on the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
PURPOSE OF THE EVENT
Provide new tools to support the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in the development and improvement of capacities to meet the growing needs for statistics related to disasters and disaster risk reduction, promoting policy coherence in implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, the SAMOA Pathway, the Paris Agreement and the Sendai Framework.
PARTICIPANTS
The target audience is officials from national statistical offices, ministries and other institutions (including National Disaster Management Agencies) working on disaster-related statistics. The course may also be useful to a broader audience that is interested in learning more about statistics related to disasters.
EVENT RESULTS
With this presentation, ESCAP and ECLAC promote:
- Increase the capacity of the States of Latin America and the Caribbean, in particular of the Small Island Developing States (SIDS), to produce selected, relevant and prioritized indicators and metrics to monitor disasters.
- Improve the generation of information to strengthen resilience to disasters in the Latin American and Caribbean region, systematizing technical documentation and tools for its implementation in the countries.
- Improve the capacity of countries to formulate, implement and monitor evidence-based national disaster risk reduction policies through the use of statistics and indicators from statistical frameworks such as the SDGs and the SIDS agenda and, at the same time, increase their capacity to monitor the implementation of these global mandates.
