Summer time ends in the US; standard time starts

This weekend, daylight saving time ends in the United States and standard time begins. Standard time begins at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday and lasts through March 12.

Americans will relish the chance to catch up on an hour of sleep and will need to turn their clocks back an hour before bed on Saturday night. The time change means that the darkness will come earlier at nightfall, but when you wake up there will be more light in the morning than now.

Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and most of Arizona do not observe daylight saving time.

The twice-a-year ritual tires some Americans and has led some members of Congress to push to make daylight saving time permanent.

In March, the Senate passed a bipartisan bill, called the Sunshine Protection Act, to end daylight savings time. The House of Representatives has not ruled on the initiative.

Promoters said the idea would have positive effects on public health and the economy, and even reduce energy consumption.
