The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, has announced that in his speech this Monday at the UN climate summit he will emphasize the importance of moving “faster and faster” towards the transition to renewable energy and that he will ensure that that the British country is at the forefront of this process as a “clean energy superpower”.
Sunak made a statement this Saturday before leaving for Egypt on Sunday, where the COP27 will take place, after changing his mind and deciding to attend the international meeting at the beginning of the week.
This Saturday he stressed that the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the “despicable” manipulation of energy prices have reinforced the importance of ending dependence on fossil fuels.
“When the world met in Glasgow last year, nations agreed on a historic roadmap to prevent catastrophic global warming. It is more important than ever that we deliver on those promises,” he said, according to the BBC.
In addition, he stressed that the fight against climate change is not just about a moral good, but is essential for “future prosperity and security”.
The ‘premier’ decided to attend the summit after receiving criticism from climate activists, opposition parties and the president of COP26, the previous edition, Alok Sharma. However, King Carlos III will not attend until the appointment as he had agreed with the previous head of government, Liz Truss.
