The Iranian government announced this Thursday sanctions against eight Canadians, including the Ministers of Public Security and Defense, Marco Mendicino and Anita Anand, respectively, and a newspaper of the North American country for their “support for terrorism.”
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has pointed out in a statement on its website that those affected gave support to the organization of the Mucaidines of the People of Iran (PMOI) and “incited and encouraged the execution of terrorist acts and violence against the people of Iran
Thus, he has detailed that among those sanctioned are also the president of the Supreme Court of Canada, Richard Wagner; the Chief of Staff of the Canadian Army, Wayne Donald Eyre; and the commander of the country’s Air Force, Eric Kenny.
On the other hand, the commanders of the Navy and the police mounted from Canada, Angus Topshee and Brenda Lucki, respectively, as well as Judge David Brown. The newspaper ‘The National Post’ has also been penalized for “supporting the sanctions” and “maintaining an anti-Iranian stance”.
“Iran emphasize that facilitating and supporting terrorist acts and the Pmoi terrorist group violates the international obligations of the Canada government in the fight against terrorism and that the application of coercive unilateral measures by the government (Canadian) is a clear violation of the fundamental principles of international standards”, he stressed.
Therefore, he has emphasized that Iran “will adopt all the necessary measures to apply these sanctions, including the prohibition on the issuance of visas, the prohibition of entry into the country, the blockade of bank accounts in Iran and the seizure of properties and goods in territory under the jurisdiction of Iran”.
“Obviously, the sanctions do not discharge the possibility of criminal procedures against these people by the competent courts due to their involvement in criminal actions,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry has settled.
The PMOI is the main organization of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), the Parliament in the exile of the resistance of Iran, founded in France in 1981. The group advocates the overthrow of the current Iranian government and has launched multiple attacks armed forces against the country in recent decades.
The PMOI actively participated in the Iranian Revolution of 1973 and carried out various attacks on SAH government buildings, theft of banks, murders to important officials and kidnapping of foreigners. During this time, the group maintained a Shiite Islamist discourse mixed with an adaptation of revolutionary Marxist ideology.
However, shortly after the success of the Revolution, the new authorities began to persecute the PMOI, which was politically distant from the government. In 1986, Masud Rajavi reached a pact with the then president of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, at that time at war against Iran, which ended up distanceing the positions.
