Elgato Facecam Pro becomes official as the first 4K60 webcam, priced at 350 euros

The webcam market, forgotten for many years by manufacturers and made up of an endless string of very low quality generic models, is going through an interesting period of activity and renewal. Added to the growing interest generated by the boom in teleworking is the streaming, with models specifically designed for content creators. The latest to go on sale is one of the most notable, since the new Elgato Facecam Pro It happens to be the first with 4K resolution at 60 FPS.

This new webcam arrives to satisfy a demanding market niche… and in a way quite uncomfortable for webcam manufacturers. Because although none of them want to admit it, the fact is that the professionals of the streaming they do not want to know anything about their models to streamerspreferring instead the typical PC-connected DSLR, which offers higher quality and more adjustment possibilities at the cost of less flexibility and higher price.

The Facecam Pro comes to compete with these traditional cameras, or at least to become a bridge between good quality webcams and the more expensive (but also much better) DSLRs. To do this, the Corsair subsidiary uses a specially designed image processor that allows it to work with images at 3840 × 2160 with 60 FPS or 1080p at the same speed, generating video in H.264 and MJPEG.

The specific identity of the sensor is unknown, but everything indicates that it is a 1/1.8-inch Sony Starvis, which we would normally find in security cameras and is characterized by great brightness. Other details of interest are the use of low dispersion glass optics (8 elements in total) and 18 anti-reflection layers, a 21mm focal length and an f/2.0 aperture.

Due to the bandwidth required to process video with these characteristics, the only possibility of connection is a USB 3.0 port. As for the physical installation, the camera has a foot to place it on the monitor without complications, which is not possible with a DSLR (not at least comfortably), although it can also be screwed to any mount that uses a wide knurled nut. standard.
