Each electrical equipment will reduce CO2 emissions to the environment by 47%. These are 30 forklifts that the company incorporated into its electric fleet. They will operate in the Lithium Finished Products, Packaging and Dispatch area of SQM’s Carmen Chemical Plant, near Antofagasta, Chile.
At the Carmen Chemical Plant, SQM implemented 30 forklifts with lithium batteries, which join the largest and most diverse electric fleet of Chilean mining. This fact was possible thanks to the alliance established with Jungheinrich. A leading company in the electromechanical industry.
The 30 electrical units are part of the project promoted by the Chilean company’s Supply Chain management called “Advances in Responsible Supply at the Carmen Chemical Plant”.
In its first stage of execution, it will allow the annual neutralization of CO2 equivalent to 51,480 trees.
“These cranes help reduce risks and improve the integrity of workers in the area. Its ergonomic system is one of the main characteristics of the EFG 220 and EFG 320 cranes,” said Germán Pérez, SQM Planning and Studies Manager.

What are the EFG 220 and EFG 320 cranes like?
One of its main characteristics is the absence of maintenance compared to vehicles that carry lead-acid batteries. In addition, they offer high availability thanks to the charging times it proposes (50% charge is achieved in 45 minutes), allowing cost savings.
“The incorporation of these new technologies allows SQM’s supplier companies to align with the company and begin to think about using these energies to become more sustainable as a region. It fills me with joy to know that we are on an excellent path”, remarked Ruth Rodríguez, General Manager of the Mining Cluster Corporation.
Each electric crane reduces CO2 emissions into the environment by 47%. Aligning this initiative with the Sustainability Plan of the Chilean company that aspires to be carbon neutral in all its business lines in 2040, and in the case of lithium, in 2030.
In addition, during the launch ceremony, Jungheinrich announced that this alliance will also allow the planting of 300 native trees in Chilean Patagonia.
