At least eleven dead in a stampede during a concert in Kinshasa

Oct. 30 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least eleven people have died after a stampede that occurred during a concert by singer Fally Ipupa held in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to the Police.

The head of the Police in Kinshasa, Sylvano Kasongo, has explained that among the fatalities there are two policemen, according to the Congolese news portal Actualité.

Examinations point to suffocation and bruises as the main cause of death. The concert took place in the Stadium of the Martyrs of Pentecost, with capacity for 80,000 spectators.

The Ministry of the Interior has targeted the organizers for the overcrowding of those attending the event, starring Fally Ipupa, one of the African country’s best-known musical stars. The concert “was at more than 100 percent capacity,” according to the Ministry.

Even before the concert, the Police used tear gas against violent groups concentrated in the vicinity of the stadium and security was overwhelmed by individuals who managed to access the VIP area.
