Hospitals in the capital are overwhelmed by the wounded from Saturday’s double car bombing. Members of the Army have begun to go to health centers to donate blood for those affected.

The mayor of Mogadishu, Yasin Madale, has published the latest official balance: 104 dead and 269 injured in the double attack with car bombs on Saturday perpetrated on a busy road in the center of Mogadishu.

“The hospitals in the capital are overwhelmed! The situation is out of control! There are too many wounded to attend to, too many dead bodies,” explained the owner of the only private ambulance company in Somalia, Abdul Jadir Adhen, in statements to the RFI station.

Jadir Adhen has warned that hospitals do not have adequate material. “Unfortunately I think there are going to be more deaths among the injured. There are some very serious ones,” he pointed out.

He has also reported that one of his ambulances was affected by the explosions. “The driver and one of the toilets traveling in the vehicle have been injured. And the ambulance is completely destroyed,” she pointed out.

DEBRIS CLEARING WORK

This Sunday morning there were still neighbors digging through the rubble in search of their missing relatives. Others have begun to clean the place, greatly affected by the shock wave that broke many of the windows in the area.

The Somali president, Hasan Sheikh Mohamud, visited the site this Sunday and condemned the “cruel and cowardly” attack while inviting the population to go to hospitals to donate blood. He has also called on the international community to send medical reinforcements and medical supplies.

The site of the suicide bombing is Mogadishu’s Zoobe crossing, the same place where more than 587 people were killed and hundreds more injured in a truck bomb explosion on October 14, 2017.

“It is in the same place and it is the same innocent people” who have been beaten, Mohamud lamented. “It’s not fair. God willing, they will no longer have the capacity to carry out a new” attack, like Zobe’s, he has pointed out.
