Communications University of Antofagasta.- The highest authority of the University of Antofagasta formed the panel “Towards sustainable mining with community participation”, an instance convened by the Regional Government, as part of the study “Towards a Regional Mining Strategy in Antofagasta” developed in agreement with the Organization for Cooperation and Economic Development (OECD) and coordinated by the Institute of Public Policies UCN.

Through a seminar that sought the exchange of experiences and the involvement of representatives of the community, the political world, the mining industry, experts in the field and universities, the activities developed within the framework of the formal start of the study “Towards a Strategy Regional Mining in Antofagasta”, convened by the Regional Government and executed in agreement with the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development).

The second instance of work contemplated in its programming the panel “Towards sustainable mining with community participation”, a meeting in which the rector of the University of Antofagasta, Dr. Marcos Cikutovic Salas, participated giving his contributions and visions in search of the preparation of the Regional Mining Strategy 2023-2050.

“Universities are places where dialogue must be made possible, research and the development of knowledge is achieved through dialogue, therefore, they are spaces where the conversation that we start in these places is amplified and diversified. We appreciate the participation of the regional universities, because through them we can deepen what arises in these instances”, declared the Governor of Antofagasta, Ricardo Díaz Cortés.

For his part, the rector of the University of Antofagasta, Dr. Marcos Cikutovic Salas, highlighted the work of the house of higher studies that he directs, where the work is aligned with one of the objectives pursued by the formulation of this mining strategy, in that economic diversification and an environmental and sustainable approach are key concepts.

“The university has been developing state-of-the-art research for a long time that has allowed us to be an institution with high national and global standards, which translates into the development of initiatives associated with Lithium, Green Hydrogen and pre-occupational health, for example. We think that we are making the contribution that the region requires to be a leader in these areas”, highlighted the rector Cikutovic.

It should be noted that this is the “first OECD mission” under the agreement signed with the Regional Government, which is also technically coordinated by the Public Policy Institute of the Universidad Católica del Norte (UCN).

It is important to note that the University of Antofagasta will also participate in this “first mission”, with representation from the Regional Centers for Environmental Studies and Education (CREA), for Advanced Research on Lithium and Industrial Minerals (Celimin) and for Energy Development (CDEA). , in addition to the Vice-rector for Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies, Dr. Rodrigo Iturriaga, who were invited to the meeting “academy-research centers”, this Wednesday, October 26.
