The NGO Amnesty International (AI) has asked the United Nations to act “urgently” after eight demonstrators have died in less than 24 hours in the context of the violent protests that the country is experiencing after the death of the young Mahsa Amini under police custody.
“(We act) in response to the unlawful killings of at least eight people committed last night by Iranian security forces when they re-opened fire on mourners and protesters in at least four provinces and based on growing international calls for a mechanism of UN,” said AI Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Heba Morayef.
In this sense, he explained that this “reckless and illegal use of firearms” reveals, “once again”, the “tragically high cost of international inaction”, after which he has urged to take “decisive measures” and convene a special session at the UN Human Rights Council.
“If decisive action is not taken, the Iranian authorities will be encouraged to crack down further on mourners and protesters who will gather in the coming days during commemorations marking 40 days since the first deaths after the deadly crackdown on Iran began. mid-September,” he said in a statement.
Thus, he explained that the UN Human Rights Council must make it clear to Iran that “its crimes will not go uninvestigated”, despite the fact that, after these “unlawful killings”, the enactment of the special Iranian mechanism to provide justice to the victims of the repression.
The continued failure to enact such a mechanism, despite the widespread unlawful killings of protesters from the nationwide protests of December 2017 to January 2018, is indicative of how these brutal tragedies in Iran have apparently been normalized. .
Both on Wednesday and throughout the day on Thursday, the Iranian security forces have repressed the protesters who have taken to the streets in the provinces of Kurdistan, Western Azerbaijan, Kermanshah and Lorestan.
Hundreds of people gathered on Wednesday at the grave of Masha Amini, in the Aichi cemetery, in the Iranian city of Saqqez, to protest against the government, while activist groups called demonstrations in various parts of the country, including the Shariati street of Tehran, the capital, and its main squares.
The population of Mahabad, which is located in the west of the country and has a Kurdish majority, also gathered protesters and even stormed the Mahabad governor’s office to protest the death of Ismail Moloudi, a young man who died at the hands of the Revolutionary Guard agents during the last day of demonstrations.
