At least five killed in an attack on a Taliban forces vehicle with medical personnel on board

Oct. 27 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Afghan Defense Ministry reported Thursday that at least five people have died in an attack by a group of armed men against an Army vehicle with medical personnel from Taliban forces on board.

The attack, which has resulted in more than a dozen injuries, took place when the vehicle carrying Army medical personnel was traveling in the province of Herat, in western Afghanistan, according to information from the Tolo television network. News.

Sources close to the matter have indicated that the victims were all inside the vehicle and are part of the Taliban forces, which have been at the forefront of the country since August 2021.

Afghanistan remains mired in a deep crisis after two decades of armed conflict. Last year, the Taliban seized Kabul, the capital, precipitating the flight of then President Ashraf Ghani after a quick recapture.

In the last year, no country has formally recognized the Taliban as the legitimate rulers of Afghanistan – in the first stage only Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan had done so – but the need to reach other agreements, for example for sending aid, has led the international community to maintain contacts.

The collective fear persists that Afghanistan will once again become a bastion for terrorist organizations since, despite the Taliban’s confessed animosity towards groups such as the Islamic State -which operates under the subsidiary of Khorasan Province–, they do seem to persist the ties that the late leader Mahmud Mansur forged with Al Qaeda.
