Electronic ink screens are gradually overcoming the barrier of electronic books. About two years ago they came to the monitors for the first time with Dasung’s Paperlike 253. Now, Philips has just updated its line of professional monitors with a proposal that, in addition to incorporating a traditional color panel, has other e-ink secondary.
So far we have not seen anything like it. Electronic ink screens either inhabited eReaders or monitors. However, Philips thought it was a good idea to launch a “hybrid” product. The Philips Business Monitor 5000 series (model 24B1D5600) is focused on productivity and, according to the manufacturer, is ideal for those who spend many hours in front of the computer for their work.

According to Product data sheetwe find a main screen 23.8-inch Vivid CrystalClear QHD with anti-glare coating and IPS technology with W-LED light-emitting diodes. At the level of resolution and refresh rate, it offers up to 2560 x 1440 at 75 Hz. The response time, for its part, is located at 4 ms. In other words, as its name indicates, it is not a proposal designed for gamers.
It should be noted that the screens have different connections. The main can be connected to a computer through a port DisplayPort 1.2 or a USB-C port (This is also used to supply power). The secondary display can only be connected via USB-C. In this case, it is the Philips SmartRemote software that is responsible for providing a consistent experience on the device and offers advanced settings.
According to what the manufacturer explains, the users of this monitor will have the possibility of carrying out all the tasks that a standard monitor needs, however, at times when they must read texts or write articles, they will be able to fix their eyes on the screen secondary electronic ink for reduce eyestrain. It remains to be seen how good this solution will be in a work scenario.
The Philips 24B1D5600 monitor is currently offered in China. Its price is 5999 yuan (about 839 euros to change). Philips has not mentioned whether it will expand the availability of this new product to other markets.
