Captain Ibrahim Traoré, leader of the coup d’état perpetrated on September 30 in Burkina Faso, has appointed a new Executive this Tuesday after the lawyer Appolinaire Joachim Kyelem de Tambela was appointed transitional prime minister.
The new government, made up of 23 ministers — including five women — keeps Bassolma Bazié as Minister of Labor; Olivia Rouamba as head of Foreign Affairs; Jean Claude Kargougou as head of the Health portfolio and Aminata Sabane as Minister of Digital Transition, as reported by Radio Omega.
Traoré had promised in his investiture speech to defend the Constitution and the transition charter, as well as to act as guarantor of national security and put an end to tumultuous months in a country that has been the scene of two coups in less than a year, starting with the one starring Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba in January, deposed in turn by Captain Traoré and much criticized by De Tambela in his television appearances.
The coup, considered a ‘palace coup’ by a sector of the military junta opposed to Damiba – who has fled to Togo -, took place in the face of the continued deterioration of the security situation and attacks by jihadist groups .
Burkina Faso has generally experienced a significant increase in insecurity since 2015, with attacks carried out by both the Al Qaeda affiliate and the Islamic State affiliate, causing a wave of internally displaced persons and refugees towards other countries of the region.
