Rishi Sunak is officially the new Prime Minister of the UK. After being proclaimed leader of the Tories this Monday, today Sunak has formally received the commission to form a Government by King Carlos III. Upon leaving his audience with the monarch, the new prime minister has vindicated his mandate and has highlighted that he comes to “correct the errors” of Truss.
“I know that Boris Johnson would agree with me that the mandate we have received from the people is not individualbut belongs to all of us and what unites us is our electoral program”, he said, in an attempt to silence critics who pointed out, since yesterday, that Rishi Sunak had not been elected by anyone. “Trust is earned and I will win the confidence of the citizens”, he said.
In addition, despite dedicating a few words of thanks to the former Prime Minister, Liz Truss, he has not stopped point out the “mistakes” made by the president that, although they have had “a noble motivation behind, such as economic growth, they are still errors” that he comes to solve. “I have been elected leader of my party and your prime minister to solve them,” he assured.
Rishi Sunak has promised that “economic stability” will be “at the center of this government” and, recognizing that the international context will force “difficult decisions”, he asked his citizens to remember his actions in the face of the Covid crisis “in which I did everything to protect citizens and businesses.”
“We know there are limits, but I promise to have the same compassion for the challenges we face today that I have had during Covid. The government I lead today will not lead the next generation and we do not want to leave them with a debt they cannot pay. I want to unite this country and I will work every day for it. This Executive will have responsibility and will be accountable,” he assured.
The new prime minister has emphasized “the difficult moment” that the United Kingdom is experiencing, after “the thousands of pounds it has cost to fight Covid and the problems arising from the war”, but has stressed that he is prepared to assume all the responsibilities. “I know perfectly well the position I have accepted, but when you have the opportunity to serve your country you cannot question the moment. I hope to be up to the demands, I am willing to lead the country, to put the needs of citizens ahead,” he insisted.
Rishi Sunak rises to power in one of the most turbulent times in the UK. Having lost the party’s primary to Liz Truss after the resignation of Boris Johnson in July, the president reaches the leadership just 45 days after Truss took office. The economic plan of the former prime minister, which triggered the fall of the pound and plunged the markets, sentenced the fate of the conservative, who did not resist internal and external pressure and resigned from her.
Upon assuming the leadership of his party, after being the only candidate capable of gathering the necessary endorsements to present himself in the primaries, he warned the Tories that it was time to “unite or die”. He assured that he would work to end the conservative psychodrama and promised to prioritize “politics, not personalities”, with a cabinet reshuffle starting this Tuesday.
