The leading exponent of the United States’ global anti-corruption fight arrived Monday for a two-day visit to Guatemala, reported the American embassy in that country.
This is Richard Nephew, who serves as the US Global Anti-Corruption Coordinator and who arrived in the Central American nation accompanied by a delegation to hold a series of state meetings.
Nephew is expected to meet with “representatives of civil society and judges to reaffirm the support of the United States for Guatemala in the fight against corruption and the promotion of accountability,” the note details.
Since last year, the United States has been expressing its concern about the lack of progress in the fight against corruption in Guatemala, and came to accuse the attorney generalConsuelo Porras, to “minimize” research in this area.
“We have serious concerns that the fight against corruption has not progressed as it should and we would like to see concrete steps,” Brian Nichols, assistant secretary for Western Hemisphere affairs at the State Department, said in December 2021.
At the beginning of October, Guatemalan Cardinal Álvaro Ramazzini announced, together with politicians and organizations that defend human rights, the creation of a front called the National Convergence of Resistance with which, he assured, they will seek to confront corruption, the co-optation of the Judicial Power and the persecution of those who fight against corruption.
“Without losing hope and the fighting spirit of the citizenry, we make this call that begins today… We want to be proactive and reaffirm the need for this convergence,” Ramazzini said at a press conference with his clerical collar and a crucifix.
