As a result of the pandemic, during the last two years Steam has significantly increased the number of users, which has led us to speak on more than one occasion about new records of concurrently connected players. At the beginning of 2020, as the quarantines were declared in different parts of the world, Steam exceeded 24 million simultaneous players and after a slump it rose again to chain several brands. In January 2021, it reached the symbolic figure of 25 million concurrent users and a year later to 28 million. After 10 months, there are already 30 million.
Steam isn’t just growing, it’s growing faster than ever despite the fact that pandemic restrictions have long been a thing of the past in most parts of the world. For comparison, it took Steam 14 years to reach 15 million concurrent players in 2017, but only 5 years to double that figure. COVID-19 gave it a boost, but then the Valve store has managed to retain the users it gained during the pandemic and add even more.
As usual, most players connected to Steam only had the client open. On this occasion, of the 30 million connected users, 8.5 million were playing one of the titles available in the store. During Sunday the games that registered the largest spikes were Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (1,050,184 players), Dota 2 (752,713 players), PUBG: Battlegrounds (442,148 players), Apex Legends (325,719 players), Lost Ark (214,439 players) and the incombustible Grand Theft Auto V (164,582 players).
Everything seems to indicate that Steam will continue to grow and will probably record a new record for concurrent users in January 2023. The first days of the year are very favorable for this type of digital platform, as Valve has shown on more than one occasion with Steam.
