The Chadian Army has used tear gas this morning to disperse new attempts at concentrations in the country’s capital, N’Djamena, despite the curfew declared by the authorities in response to the very serious violence on Wednesday, in a series of demonstrations throughout the city against the “transitional president” Mahamat Idriss Déby, which have resulted in at least fifty deaths.
The Al Wihda news portal has confirmed that the military acted in the neighborhoods of Habena and Kamnda, where they fired tear gas at around 05:30 in the morning, causing panic among residents on their way to work.
The authorities, it should be remembered, have declared a state of emergency and a curfew from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., particularly in the capital, following the demonstrations against Déby’s recent declaration as transitional president and his consequent permanence in power two years after the celebration of some “national dialogues” ended two weeks ago and boycotted by the opposition.
Déby took office in April last year, after his father, Idriss Deby Itno, was killed during a military operation against the rebels, after 30 years in power. The current ruler had promised to return power to civilians after 18 months, a term that expires this month.
