Australia, "concerned" about the effects of the free trade agreement with the United Kingdom after the departure of Truss

LONDON, Oct. 21 (DPA/EP) –

The Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, has expressed this Friday his “concern” about the consequences that the departure of the British Prime Minister, Liz Truss, and the instability of the United Kingdom may lead to the free trade agreement between the two countries.

This has been made known by the Albanese Prime Minister in statements to journalists during an event in Perth, in Western Australia, from where he has confirmed that he has already spoken with Truss to speed up these agreements as soon as possible.

“I have fast-tracked with Prime Minister Truss about this. We have discussed how to try to get it done before the end of this year, to make sure the proper parliamentary processes go through our respective parliaments,” Albanese said.

The Australian Prime Minister has also allowed himself to joke about the turbulent political situation in the United Kingdom and has ruled out that for now such a situation could occur in his country. “My government is stable. Adults are in charge.”

Albanese, in the position of Prime Minister of Australia for five months, already had the opportunity to meet Boris Johnson during the NATO summit in Madrid held in June, while Truss met last month on the occasion of the Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

This Thursday, Truss announced her resignation as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom just 44 days after taking office, for what will go down in history as the most short-lived mandate at the head of the British government. External financial and political pressures, and especially internal ones, ended up propitiating its downfall.
