The 37th High Criminal Court in Istanbul has rejected the request for the extradition of Samir Nasri Salem Handal, accused of participating in the plot in which Haitian President Jovenel Moise was assassinated and the subject of a red Interpol arrest warrant.
The court has also ordered freedom without charge for Handal, a Jordanian businessman who would have rented his house to Christian Emmanuel Sanon, who would have organized the murder, reports the Turkish press.
Handal was detained at Estmbul Airport while traveling from the United States to Jordan in November 2021. He was jailed under Interpol’s international arrest warrant and has spent eight months in prison.
The defense has argued that Handal did not know that Moise’s murder was being prepared and that he only rented the house without further knowledge of the matter.
Since Moise’s assassination on July 7, the turbulent political and economic situation in Haiti has worsened even more. Soon the power vacuum degenerated into a security crisis, with daily murders and kidnappings, especially in large areas of the capital.
