At least 30 dead in demonstrations against the president of Chad

Oct. 20 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least 30 people have died, ten of them police officers, as part of a series of demonstrations that shook Chad on Wednesday in protest at the decision of the president, Mahamat Idriss Déby, to consolidate himself in office for the next two years.

This has been confirmed by the Chadian government, which has also recognized that there are many injured as a result of demonstrations that for the Executive spokesman “became an insurrection”, collects the Alwihda Info portal.

According to information from the Tchadinfos portal, protesters have attacked public buildings, including the Government, the Public Security Commission. Likewise, the headquarters of the National Union for Development and Renewal (UNDR), the formation of the transitional Prime Minister, Saleh Kebzabo, has been looted.

The main demonstrations and violent acts have been registered in the capital of Chad, N’Djamena, and in Moundou, the second most prominent city in the country. The situation in both towns is already calmer, although the authorities have not yet finished counting the dead, according to Radio France Internationale.

After learning about the incidents, the former Chadian president and president of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has fervently condemned “the repression” of the protesters in his country

“I call on the parties to respect human life and property and favor peaceful ways to overcome the crisis,” said the president of the African Union Commission on his official profile on the social network Twitter.

For its part, French diplomacy has issued a statement in which it has joined the condemnation of these episodes of violence in which, they say, “lethal weapons against protesters” have been used.

“France does not play any role in these events, which are strictly a matter of Chad’s internal politics,” Paris added, denying “false information” linking it to the protests.
