The main hall of a university collapses on the Italian island of Sardinia

Oct. 19 () –

The Italian Fire Department has reported on Tuesday night the collapse of the main hall of the University of Cagliari, a city located in the south of the Italian island of Sardinia.

At around 9:55 p.m., a crew of Firefighters went to the University of Cagliari after being notified of the collapse of part of the university institution building, certifying that the lecture hall had fallen under its own weight.

After searching for more than two hours with the help of dogs and drones for possible victims under the rubble of the main hall, local authorities have notified that there were no people inside the building when it collapsed, according to the latest report.

The mayor of Cagliari, Paolo Truzzu, welcomed the fact that the incident took place outside of school hours, with no victims to mourn, according to ‘Unione Sarda’.

“It happened while there were no classes, we have to thank God that he has forgiven us (…). If it had happened several hours ago, it would have been a disaster,” Truzzu said in statements to the aforementioned media.

So far it has not transpired why the building collapsed, although Italian student associations have pointed to the poor state of some educational institutions in the country as the reason for the collapse of the main hall.
