Electronic Arts and Maxis have celebrated the 22-year history of The Sims with an event entitled Behind The Sims Summit where the big announcement has been Project Rene, the name behind which the next generation of The Sims hides. The title is in its early stages and will be years in development, but the publisher has already advanced the first details. In addition, EA has recalled that from today The Sims 4 is a game free-to-play that later Curseforge will have a platform to download mods and player-created content.

“The title Project Rene has been chosen because it is reminiscent of words like ‘renewal’, ‘rebirth’ and ‘reborn’, which represent the developers’ commitment to the future of The Sims,” explains Electronic Arts in a statement. “The game will stay true to what The Sims have always been, while evolving the way those Sims think and behave.” The company ensures that Project Rene “will reimagine The Sims with more ways to play, tools to encourage creativity and the ability to tell stories.”

Among the pillars of Project Rene will be the option to play The Sims alone or collaborate with others, or to play through other compatible platforms.

“From the beginning, The Sims has defined life simulation games and has continued to grow into an incredible platform that fosters creativity and self-expression,” says Lyndsay Pearson, Vice President of The Sims Franchise. “Today begins our new journey, where we will be working on a new game for the next few years, currently titled Project Rene. We are building on the same foundations that have made The Sims appealing to multiple generations of players, testing the limits to create new experiences.”

Electronic Arts has also announced that, for the first time in The Sims history, the game will partner with Overwolf to offer The Sims 4 players a new platform to download mods and custom content created by players. This platform is none other than CurseForge, a popular manager of mods where creators can host their content. “For years the creators of mods and custom content have shared their talents with the Sims 4 community, and today is the day we step up to recognize and celebrate their contribution,” says Electronic Arts.
