BRUSSELS, Oct. 17 (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Member States of the European Union have agreed this Monday to deploy a mission of experts in Armenia to monitor and analyze the situation on the border with Azerbaijan, with the ultimate goal of delimiting the international border between the two countries.
The team of 40 experts will travel to the Armenian area of the border, where there has been an upsurge in fighting in September with the incursion of Azeri forces into Armenian soil. The mission aims to facilitate the restoration of peace and security in the area, promote confidence and promote the delimitation of the international border between the two states.
“The deployment of 40 experts will help build confidence in the unstable situation that exists and that puts people’s lives at risk and the resolution of the conflict”, has valued the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Policy, who considers this step “further proof” of the EU’s commitment to contribute to peace in the Caucasus.
This decision follows the conclusions agreed in the meetings between the parties, with the mediation of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the French President, Emmanuel Macron, at the European summit in Prague.
For logistical reasons, the experts will travel from Georgia, where the EU maintains a civilian advisory mission. This monitoring operation will be temporary and in principle will not last more than two months.
