Microsoft has updated its line of Surface devices with the new Surface Pro 9 convertibles, the Surface Laptop 5 and the All in One Surface Studio 2+. Some with striking changes and others that fall a bit short or without significant changes from the versions that precede them.
Microsoft Surface Pro 9: Alder Lake and a new version with ARM
The most famous convertible in its most capable version, Microsoft’s Surface Pro, goes into its ninth generation and is armed with low-power Intel Core i5-1235U and Core i7-1255U Alder Lake processors with a base TDP of 15W. They are accompanied by 8 to 32 GB of LPDDR5 memory and NVMe SSDs ranging from 128 GB in the most modest model to 1 TB in the most capable model. The graphics part is delegated to the Iris Xe iGPU integrated in the Alder Lake processors.
We have WiFi 6E connectivity and options with 5G connectivity with internal modem. Connectivity happens to have two USB-C 4.0 with Thunderbolt4.
The most interesting news is that the Surface Pro 9 model with 5G will have an ARM processor made by Qualcomm in collaboration with Microsoft, the Microsoft SQ3 possibly based on the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 that we were able to test in the review of the Lenovo ThinkPad X13s
The price of the basic model of the Surface Pro 9 starts at 1,299 euros and the lightest will only weigh 879 grams.
Surface Studio 2+: an All in One that starts at 5,369 euros and stays with the eleventh generation of Intel
When the thirteenth generation of Intel processors is just around the corner, Microsoft has decided to launch its All in One Surface Studio 2+ with a processor from a couple of generations ago. Despite this, its price starts at 5,369 euros when it hits the market from November 1 of this year.
In exchange for that astronomical figure, we will receive a processor from the Intel H35 range, that is, laptop processors limited to 35W TDP, such as the Intel Core i7-11370H. It is accompanied by a laptop NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 of which Intel does not give details about whether it has a TDP limitation.
The RAM will be 32 GB DDR4 and it will have a 1 TB SSD, all under a 28-inch PixelSense multitouch screen with a resolution of 4,500 x 3,000 individually calibrated, covered with Gorilla Glass 3 and with Dolby Vision together with a contrast of 1,200:1.
It integrates three USB-C with USB4 and Thunderbolt 4.0, two USB-A 3.1 (3.2 Gen 2), Gigabit Ethernet, WiFi 6 and BT 5.1. As we can see, we do not have WiFi 6E
Surface Laptop 5: Same as its predecessor but with Alder Lake-U
In the case of 5th Generation Surface Laptop, the Surface device, which is a conventional laptop, hardly changes in performance, moving to low-power Intel Core Alder Lake U processors, the range that falls below the P with models such as the Core i5-12350U and the Core i7-1255U along with the same graphics as the 11th Gen, Intel’s own Iris Xe. It seems that Mcirosoft does not opt for AMD in this generation or for Alder Lake-P processors, more powerful than the chosen ones and as indicated by the first leaks.
There will be versions ranging from 8 to 32 GB of LPDDR5X memory and with NVMe SSD capacities ranging from 256 GB to 1 TB. Connectivity USB-C, Thunderbolt, USB-A 3.1 (3.2 gen 2), WiFi 6, BT 5.1 and 13.5 and 15-inch touch screens with resolutions of 2,235 x 1,505 and 2,495 x 1,665 respectively end up completing the specifications of this Microsoft laptop.
Their prices start at 1,180 euros for the 13.5-inch version and 1,530 euros for the basic 15-inch model.
