The Sri Lanka Disaster Management Center has reported the death of three people as a result of heavy rains in recent days, for which nearly 55,000 people have been displaced from their homes for security reasons.
The Meteorological Department has warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue due to the influence of the so-called Intertropical Convergence Zone, where the winds of the two hemispheres converge, which is close to the island.
For its part, the Sri Lanka Police have reported that at least 1,620 people have been forced to abandon their residence due to the overflow of the Kelani River that reaches Colombo, the most populous city in the country and where the headquarters of the Government.
A total of 682 families from Malwana, Yabaraluwa Norte, Yabaraluwa Sur, Biyagama Este Sur, towns located in the southwest of the country, near Colombo, have been relocated to safer places, according to the local News First network.
Police authorities have also urged drivers in the area to use alternative routes in order to ensure their safety.
