The president of the Central African Republic (CAR), Faustin-Archange Touadéra, has announced the launch of a government-backed bitcoin hub, after ratifying Parliament’s decision to make this cryptocurrency a legal tender.
“Gold served as the engine of our civilization for an era. In this new era, digital gold will serve the same for the future,” he said in a message on his Twitter account to announce the launch of the Sango Project.
“Sango Project is the foundation on which we will build, together,” he added, days after stating that “mathematics is the language of the universe and bitcoin is universal money.”
Touadéra approved a decree at the end of April converting bitcoin into legal tender, following in the footsteps of El Salvador. RCA thus became the first country in Africa to regulate the use of this cryptocurrency.
“The adoption of bitcoin as the official currency represents a decisive step towards the opening of new opportunities for our country,” said the spokesman for the RCA Presidency, Obed Namsio, who stressed that it is a “historic decision” with which “The economic turnaround and peacebuilding plan enters a new phase.”
On the other hand, Namsio stressed that Touadéra “will support all the necessary efforts, respecting the law, to carry this path to the end that puts RCA on the map of the most courageous and visionary countries in the world, for all that it means and implies the acceptance of cryptocurrencies as means of payment.”
