Borrell insists that Iran cease the repression of the protests and that they be held accountable for the death of Masha Amini

BRUSSELS, Oct. 14 (EUROPE PRESS) –

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has insisted this Friday to Iran to stop the violent repression of peaceful protests after the death of Masha Amini in police custody and to be held accountable for the violent response to the protests and the death of the young woman.

In a new call with the Iranian Foreign Minister, Hosein Amirabdolahian, the head of community diplomacy has stressed the “united and clear” position of the EU in the face of the protests that have been taking place in the country, after the death of Masha Amini in police custody after being arrested for allegedly wearing the veil incorrectly.

“People in Iran have the right to peacefully protest and defend fundamental rights. Violent repression must stop immediately. Protesters must be released. Internet access and accountability are needed,” the High Representative said in a message on social networks.

This is the second contact between Borrell and Amirabdolahian in a week and it comes a few days before the EU adopts sanctions against those responsible for the repression in Iran. The decision to freeze assets in the EU and veto the entry to community soil of “a dozen people” was agreed at the level of ambassadors of the 27 this Wednesday, but will be formalized next Monday by the Foreign Ministers who will meet in Luxembourg.

For its part, Tehran already warned the EU last week of the consequences of taking “hasty measures” due to the situation in the country, which it attributes to “rioters and terrorists”, and indicated that it will respond to the measures that are adopt.
