Germany, Australia, Denmark, the United States, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom have condemned on Wednesday the growing military involvement of Eritrean troops in the conflict in the Ethiopian region of Tigray.
The aforementioned countries have published a joint statement in which they show their “deep concern about the escalation of the conflict and the ongoing humanitarian crisis” in Ethiopia.
Likewise, the six countries have urged the Ethiopian and regional authorities in Tigray “to immediately stop their military offensives”, while they have pointed out the growing role of Eritrea in the conflict.
“We condemn the increasing involvement of Eritrean military forces in northern Ethiopia. We urge Eritrean forces to cease their military operations and withdraw from northern Ethiopia. All foreign actors must cease actions fueling this conflict.” , reads the collective letter.
“Any lasting solution must include accountability for human rights abuses and violations,” continues the text, which has denounced abuses against civilians, including unlawful killings, abuse and gender-based violence, according to multiple reports from different organizations.
In this regard, they have once again called on the regional authorities in Tigray to participate in African Union-led talks aimed at helping Ethiopia achieve lasting peace.
This statement, in fact, came days after the African Union postponed the talks that were to begin in South Africa, as a result of the lack of willingness on both sides, reports the Garowe Online newspaper.
