The European Union has condemned this Wednesday the attack perpetrated last weekend in the town of Garabtisan, in eastern Djibouti, for which at least seven soldiers lost their lives.
“The European Union learned with dismay of the attack perpetrated against the Djibouti Armed Forces and strongly condemns this act of violence and cowardice,” EU Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Nabila Massrali said in a statement.
Massrali, on behalf of Brussels, has conveyed “his most sincere condolences to the authorities of Djibouti and to the families and relatives”.
In addition, the Foreign Affairs spokeswoman reaffirmed the community commitment “with the people and the State of Djibouti, both in political dialogue and in development cooperation”.
France has also previously condemned the attack and shown its solidarity with the Djiboutian people and authorities.
Last Thursday night, an armed rebel group attacked a military base, which caused the death of at least seven soldiers. Four more members are wounded and six are missing.
The Ministry of Defense of the African country blamed the responsibility for the attack on the rebel armed wing of the Front for Unity and Restoration for Democracy (FRUD).
“This gang is well known for its heinous and criminal acts of terror and looting in remote areas of the country,” the Ministry denounced in a statement picked up by Djibouti state television.
“Reinforcements went out immediately to support this advanced unit and we have started a manhunt. All human and material resources are committed to neutralizing these terrorists and finding our six missing people,” adds the Ministry.
