At least twelve people have died and 30 more have been injured this Saturday after a fire that has affected a bus after colliding with a fuel transport tanker in the city of Nashik, in the Indian state of Maharashtra.
“Most of the deceased were passengers on the sleeper bus. The injured have been transferred to a hospital for treatment,” Nashik Police Deputy Commissioner Amol Tambe explained in statements collected by the Indian television network NDTV.
It has also announced an investigation to establish the specific causes of the accident, which occurred around 5:15 in the morning, according to eyewitnesses.
Videos released show a large fireball engulfing the bus as firefighters try to douse the flames. The first to arrive at the scene explained that the fire was so intense that they could not do anything to get the passengers out.
The final death toll could increase due to the seriousness of some of the injured, authorities have highlighted.
The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has already announced financial aid of 20 million rupees (about 250,000 euros) for each family that has lost a member in the accident. The injured will receive about 50,000 rupees (620 euros).
