With the war in Ukraine and the political situation in Venezuela and Nicaragua as the most controversial issues, the OAS General Assembly, which brings together 32 countries, is held in Lima.
The Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, arrived in Lima on Wednesday to meet with the President of Peru, Pedro Castillo, and participate in the General Assembly of the Organization of American States.
This Thursday, Blinken promoted in the OAS condemnations against Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Cuba. The Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, sent a video requesting that the American body condemn the Russian invasion of his country.
A resolution to that effect has been backed by 24 countries. The resolution qualifies as “illegal and unjustified” the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Among the nations that did not support this resolution condemning Russia were Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.
Nicaragua and Venezuela, other hot topics
A resolution condemning the government of Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua for the repression against the opposition and human rights violations, promoted by the United States, Canada, Chile, among others, is expected to reach majority support.
Regarding Venezuela, a request to annul the representation that in 2019 was granted in the OAS to a representative of the opposition Juan Guaidó reached a majority, with 19 votes, but did not achieve the two thirds necessary to make it effective.
Only four countries – the United States, Canada, Guatemala and Paraguay – supported the Venezuelan opposition. There were nine abstentions.
