July 3 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Egyptian authorities have launched an investigation into the death of two swimmers from what could be a shark attack in the Sahl Hashish resort, south of Hurghada, in the Red Sea.
The commission, made up of specialists from the Red Sea Protectorate and the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA), will study the reasons and circumstances behind the alleged attack, the Environment Minister reported on Sunday. Yasmine Fuad.
For now, the governor of the Red Sea province, Amr Hanafy, has ordered the indefinite suspension of activities at the scene of the incident, according to a note from the Ministry collected by the newspaper ‘Al Ahram’.
Shark attacks have been relatively rare in Egypt’s Red Sea coastal region in recent years. Three are on record in the last seven years: in 2020, a Ukrainian boy lost an arm and an Egyptian tour guide lost a leg in a shark attack; in 2018, a shark killed a Czech tourist and in 2015 another similar attack claimed the life of a German tourist.
This latest attack comes as Egypt’s tourism sector struggles to recover from the impact of the war between Russia and Ukraine, as the country relies heavily on tourists from both countries.
