BRUSSELS, Oct. 6 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The European Parliament has condemned the death of the young Iranian Mahsa Amini, who died in custody after being arrested for improperly wearing the veil, and has called on the EU to impose sanctions against those involved in this case and in the repression of the protests that arose in the subsequent weeks.
The European Parliament has urged the Iranian authorities to carry out an “impartial and effective” investigation of the circumstances surrounding the death of Amini, arrested by the so-called Morale Police on September 13. The call also extends to the UN Human Rights Council, to start its own investigation as soon as possible.
MEPs, through a resolution, have expressed their solidarity with the demonstrators who have taken to the streets of different Iranian cities to protest this case and demand improvements in terms of freedoms and rights. Thus, they have demanded the immediate release of the people detained in the framework of these protests.
The High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, urged the Iranian Foreign Minister, Hosein Amirabdolahian, on Wednesday to hold Tehran accountable and cease the violent repression of the protests, in the midst of a debate on the adoption of possible sanctions for part of the block. The head of Iranian diplomacy, for his part, called for “hasty measures” not to be taken.
