The 26-year-old Chilean tennis player Cristian Garín, number 43 in the world, went to the round of 16 of the Wimbledon tournament this Saturday, defeating Jenson Brooksby 6-2, 6-3, 1-6 and 6-4. Although he admits that the match was very tough against his American rival.
Garin, who is making it to the fourth round of the Grand Slam on grass for the second time in his career, needed two hours and 50 minutes to beat the 21-year-old American, ranked 34th in the world.
“It was a very, very tough game,” Garin said, acknowledging that “Jenson is a great competitor” with a game “very intelligent. I think I played very solid the whole game and I’m very happy,” added the tennis player from Santiago.
Garín started the match with a steady hand, scoring two sets in less than an hour and a half. But he started the third moto faltering. He immediately conceded a first break of serve and although he saved a break point in game four he ended up losing serve again in game six.
More effective than his opponent at the net, the 26-year-old Chilean took risks, pushing shots close to the sidelines, sometimes going wide at key points. But he ended up beating the Californian, who is participating in Wimbledon for the first time.
This is the fifth Wimbledon for Garín: in 2017, 2018 and 2019 he did not go beyond the first round but in 2021 he reached the round of 16, where he was eliminated by the six-time champion and then world number one Novak Djokovic. This year he benefited in the first round of the covid withdrawal of the dangerous Italian Matteo Berrettini, last year’s finalist and one of the great favorites. In his place, Garín faced the Swedish Elias Ymer, 137th in the world and retaken from the qualifying phase, whom he won 6-3, 7-5 and 6-4.
