Members of the UCSC Faculty of Sciences gave a talk at the Liceo Baldomero Lillo de Lota on the use and advantages of pellets for heating.
Jean Pierre Molina Medina/ Journalist Faculty of Sciences Ucsc.-Knowing the characteristics, operation and qualities of the production of pellets and their use was the objective of the talk held at the Baldomero Lillo de Lota establishment. The activity was organized by the working group of Dr. Laura Azócar, in which the postdoctoral researcher Dr. Robinson Muñoz and the PhD student in Sciences with a mention in Biodiversity and Bioresources, Gerald Cifuentes, participated.
The link with this educational establishment began during the FIC Biobío Pellets project. The school, in addition to teaching classes, plays a fundamental role in the entire community, since different activities are carried out such as cultural, social and sports events, among others.
The talk was addressed to students from different courses, with the idea that they themselves would become ambassadors of the subject and thus spread its importance among the other members of the community. This was explained by Dr. Robinson Muñoz, pointing out that “the link was generated from the FIC Biobío Pellets project. Two pellet stoves were installed, which helped us to show them how they work, to see each of its parts and the technology used. It was a theoretical and practical activity.
At the beginning, a contextualization of the atmospheric decontamination plans was carried out. In addition, the results and part of the work carried out by the specialists of the FIC Biobío Pellets project were detailed. “The students were very participative, they contributed with ideas and curiosities. We tried to explain the contents in a simple and friendly way, so that they understood concepts such as calorific power, for example. We explained to them from their experience with firewood and that they also understood the differences between wet and dry firewood”, added Dr. Robinson Muñoz.
It should be remembered that one of the milestones of the FIC Biobío Pellets project was to install two stoves in this establishment: one in the science laboratory and the other in the library, two strategic points, whose use is recurrent both for schoolchildren and for the community in general. .
In the future, it is intended to continue with the work together with the Baldomero Lillo School and even carry out more workshops and visits to laboratories located on the San Andrés campus of the UCSC.
“We want to formalize a relationship with them. Currently, they are formulating projects for the Environmental Protection Fund, the idea is to collaborate, contributing from a more scientific point of view, as advisors, in addition to training, talks and even visits to our facilities”, concluded Dr. Muñoz.
