Oct. 3 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Government of Somalia has announced the death of a co-founder of Al Shabaab in an operation carried out in the town of Haramka, located in the Middle Jubba region, amid increased offensives against the terrorist group.
The Somali Ministry of Information has indicated in a statement that the suspect was Abdullahi Nadir, “a senior member of Al Shabaab terrorists long wanted by the Government of Somalia.”
Nadir, alias ‘Abdulahi Yare’, was killed in “an operation planned by the Somali Army and carried out with the cooperation of international partners,” according to the ministry, which did not provide further details.
Thus, he has highlighted that Nadir was one of the founders of the group and that in the past he was in charge of Al Shabaab’s finances. In addition, he was the brother-in-law of Hassan Dahir Aueis, a former Al Shabaab senior official.
“His death means removing a thorn from the Somali people,” the ministry stressed, adding that “the Somali government is determined to punish other criminals involved in the conspiracy against the Somali people.”
“The Government is grateful to the Somali people and international friends whose cooperation facilitated the death of this leader (of Al Shabaab), who was an enemy of the Somali nation,” he stressed in his statement, published through his social networks.
The Somali authorities have increased their offensives against Al Shabaab in recent weeks and the African country’s Interior Minister, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, recently confirmed that Turkish-made ‘Bayraktar TB2’ drones are involved in them.
Somalia is facing an increase in the number of attacks by the Islamist militia, linked to the terrorist organization Al Qaeda, both in the capital and in other areas of the south of the country, which has led the president to promise a reinforcement of the security operations to deal with the threat.
