At least four people have been killed and a dozen injured on Sunday night after a car crashed into a bus stop in the Slovak capital Bratislava.
“So far, the number of reported victims is 4-5 and others are seriously injured,” said the mayor of the old town, Zuzana Aufrichtová, while warning that the data may vary in the coming hours. “The rescuers are actively intervening at the scene to save all lives,” she added.
“The tragic car accident occurred today after 10:15 p.m. in (…) Bratislava, where a passenger motor vehicle crashed into a public transport stop. There were several people at the stop at the time of the incident “, reported the Fire Department.
The bus stop, located on the outskirts of the old town, was packed with people waiting for regular buses heading south of the Danube to Petrzalka, the city’s most populous district.
The mayor of the capital, Matus Vallo, has expressed his condolences: “It is difficult for me to find words for the tragic event that occurred late at night.”
It was initially unclear why the car drove into the waiting crowd, but local reports, unconfirmed by police, said the driver was thought to be under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
For its part, the Bratislava Police have asked citizens for help. “In case you witness this fact and have information that can help in the investigation of your circumstances, we ask you to call” the Police, they have indicated in a statement through their official Facebook account.
